2010 ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

 2010 Scholarship Application

The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) Academic Scholarship Program is an annual program administered by the BEF Scholarship Committee, under the direction and guidance of the BEF Board of Trustees. The objective is to grant scholarships to high school seniors who have benefited from the sport of billiards and are entering their first year of college.

Awards are offered in two categories: a single BEF "Excellence in Education" scholarship ($5,000 awarded over a two-year term) and multiple BEF "Aiming for Higher Education" scholarships (7x $1,000 awarded over one term). Each single applicant will be considered in both categories; only one completed application is required. The BEF reserves the right to make changes to these published policies and criteria at any time.

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

  1. A minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or higher, on a 4.0 scale, is required. NOTE: If your school does not assign a GPA, it is your responsibility to have an authorized registrar compute and verify what your GPA would be based on your current grades.
  2. Must certify either: ACT score of 23 or higher OR SAT combined score (critical reading + math) of 1050 or higher.
  3. Must complete an essay of 500 words minimum (1,000 words maximum, see below).
  4. Must be accepted to an accredited (by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education) undergraduate academic program by June 1, 2010.
  5. Must attend an accredited undergraduate institution and carry at least 12 hours per semester. If an award is given, all payments are made directly to the college or university and must be claimed by your 23rd birthday.

ESSAY CRITERIA (500 word minimum / 1,000 word maximum)

Only ONE 500-1000 word essay is required, and will be used to consider applicants for both the "Excellence in Education" and "Aiming for Higher Education" scholarship awards. Essays must address this topic:

"Billiards touches the social, physical and mental needs of today's youth and allows students to apply new knowledge to life's challenges. The sport has the ability to raise one's self-esteem and social skills as well as enhance the development of movement skills. Please expand on how billiards has touched your life."
